Sagara Sanosuke Makes an Appearance
Kenshin and the others, including Ashitaro, Aran, and Asahi, reluctantly make their way to Hakodate, Hokkaido, over three days.
Upon arrival, they immediately encounter Yamino Takeshi, whom they had tried to escape from.
In the midst of this, Kenshin and the bearded Sagara Sanosuke, who has returned to Japan, are also present.
Feeling outmatched, Yamino’s leader, faced with the formidable Battousai, decides to retreat.
With Yamino’s presence in Hokkaido, Kenshin suspects that Kaoru’s father may be involved in something sinister.
Kenshin offers to assist Sanosuke, who gladly accepts, saying, “It’s a friend’s request. I’m happy to help.”
Saito Hajime at Goryokaku
Sanosuke reunites with Kaoru, expressing surprise at the bond that has formed between her and Kenshin.
Just when they think the situation is resolved, Asahi tries to escape again.
As a former member of Yamino, Asahi knows Kenshin from his days as Battousai and considers him an enemy.
Kenshin decides to investigate a photography studio where Asahi’s father may have been involved.
They encounter a person who claims to have taken the photograph, mentioning the alarming events happening at Mt. Hakodate.
This individual turns out to be Mishima Keiji, whom Kenshin once saved in Shingetsu Village and who is now a policeman thanks to Saito Hajime’s recommendation.
Mishima shows them a worn-out sword that once belonged to Saito Hajime, emphasizing the threat posed by Kenshin’s prowess as a swordsman.
Saito Hajime Strikes!
They recall the battle between Saito Hajime and the swordsmanship weapon.
At the summit of Mt. Hakodate, a duel takes place between Saito and the swordsman, Itokiri Byakuya.
Despite dealing a deadly blow with his Gatotsu, Saito is unable to land a fatal strike. In return, Saito’s sword is broken, and he is injured, with his left arm fractured by Itokiri’s mysterious ability.
Yet, unwavering in his belief of Aku Soku Zan, Saito stands his ground. Mishima intervenes in the duel, creating a two-on-one situation and managing to capture Itokiri.
However, Itokiri seems to have allowed himself to be captured deliberately.
Mishima asks Kenshin to find out what the swordsmanship weapon is planning, while Saito receives treatment for his injuries at a hot spring resort.
Interrogating the Swordsmanship Weapon
Kenshin entrusts the search for Kaoru’s father to Kaoru, while he and Sanosuke interrogate Itokiri.
Ashitaro and Aran are tasked with finding Asahi.
Kenshin and Sanosuke head to the special prison at Goryokaku, a star-shaped Western-style fortress.
Itokiri’s goal is not massacre but to find formidable opponents during battle.
Finally, Kenshin and Itokiri face off, as Itokiri had been eagerly awaiting Kenshin’s arrival.
Itokiri, along with Shino Morizumi and Kenshin’s comrades like Sagara Sanosuke and Hiko Seijuro, has been gathering information on strong opponents.
Kenshin asks Itokiri who the swordsmanship weapon is and what their goal is. Itokiri explains that the swordsmanship weapon is Japan’s trump card against foreign forces and that Japan needs to develop the strength to overcome foreign weapons.
However, lacking practical experience, the swordsmanship weapon chose Hakodate as a battleground.
The unit led by Itokiri, including several other members, aims to occupy Hakodate and then target the Karafuto Prison, where former Juppongatana and a kendo instructor were incarcerated.
Despite numerous prisoners escaping during the swordsmanship weapon’s attack, the guards are overwhelmed by its power.
However, as the disparity in strength is too great, they cannot obtain any valuable information through interrogation.
The true purpose of the swordsmanship weapon’s attack was to free the former Juppongatana and the kendo instructor incarcerated at Karafuto
Prison. Kenshin declares his determination to stop the swordsmanship weapon’s rampage with all his might, conveying the seriousness of the successor of the Hiten Mitsurugi style, Himura Kenshin!
