あのカーロスまで・・・
丹下段平の代わりに、カーロス・リベラ戦の残りの半分のファイトマネーを受け取りにきたジョー。
しかし、ファイトマネーに色を付けて、小切手を切ろうとした葉子に、ジョーはすごい剣幕で怒る。
葉子としては、素晴らしい試合を見せてくれた感謝の意味合いでしたが、ジョーにはそれが、男と男の闘いに割って入ってこられたような気がして我慢ならない。
この二人はいつも顔を合わせれば喧嘩になってしまう、それは最後の最期、ギリギリまで続きます。
この日は、無冠の帝王 カーロス・リベラがチャンピオンのホセ・メンドーサに挑戦したタイトルマッチ。
ジョーが帰ろうとしたとき、葉子のマネージャーが血相を変えて海の向こうの試合結果を伝えに来る。
ジョーも葉子もてっきり、カーロスがＫＯ勝ちした報告かと思いきや・・・なんと、僅か１Ｒ１分３３秒で、カーロスがＫＯ負けしたとショッキングなニュース！
しかも、カーロスのマネージャーであるロバートは、ホセに負けたのではなく、既に日本のボクサー、ジョー・ヤブキに壊されていたと告白する。
それを聞かされたジョーは、ウルフ、力石、カーロスと俺が闘った相手はみんな、皆・・・と茫然自失となり、白木ジムを後にする。
白木葉子が想うジョーの未来
これまでのジョーのニックネームは、地獄からの使者・矢吹丈。
そして、カーロス戦のニュースを聞いた新聞記者が付けた異名は、死神・矢吹丈。
只でさえ、ジョーの試合相手は難航するのに、この報道で誰も闘いたがらない。
万策尽きた、段平は最後の手段として因縁浅からぬ白木ジムへ出向き、白木葉子にマネジメントの相談。
すると、白木葉子は段平に日本だけじゃない、世界に目を向けて、ゆくゆくはチャンピオン ホセ・メンドーサとジョーは闘うべきと仰天プランを話す。
ジョーは、白木葉子を鼻持ちならないお嬢様と忌み嫌いますが、真実は、白木葉子がいなかったら、カーロス戦も、ましてジョーのラストマッチとなるホセ・メンドーサ戦も実現していません。
白木葉子はジョーにとって、幸運の女神でもあり、破滅の女神と、両方の顔を持つ女性だったかもしれません。
最後には真っ白な灰だけが・・
一方、紀ちゃんこと林紀子と、ジョーは何のわだかまりも無いし、まして紀ちゃんは、ジョーに対してずっと好意的です。
しかし、ジョーにそれに気づけと言うのは無理な話で（笑）ジョーはボクシングしか頭にないのです。
カーロス・リベラの衝撃的なKO負け、そしてパンチドランカーとなってしまったニュースから数日後、ふとしたことから、ジョーと紀ちゃんは最初で最後のデートをする。
その時、紀ちゃんは日増しに元気がなくなっていく、闘犬のように傷付くジョーを見かねて、ボクシングを止めるように説得する。
しかし、ジョーは、顎を破壊したウルフ金串、逝ってしまった力石徹、そしてジョーとの試合で壊れたとされるカーロス・リベラのためにも、今更、ボクシングを止めることはできない。
それにボクシングが心底、好きなんだと話す。
そして、紀ちゃんがジョーを諦める決定的な想いを話す。
「ボクシングを完全燃焼するまでやりきった時、燃えカスなんて残らない。残るのは真っ白な灰だけだ・・」
この破壊衝動というか、どこにも自分が入る余地がないことに気付いた紀子。
「私、とても、とても付いていけそうにない」
ジョーに対する、自分の気持ちに区切りを付けて、一人、去っていく紀ちゃん。
紀ちゃんの性格と気立ての良さは、少年漫画のヒロインの中でも突出しているだけに残念です。
ジョーにしても、この時、自分の放った言葉に対して、よりボクシングに殉じる覚悟を決めたような気さえします。

Instead of Danpei Tange, Joe comes to collect the remaining half of the fight money from the Carlos Rivera match.
However, when Yoko tries to add some color to the payment and cut a check, Joe explodes in anger.

These two always end up fighting whenever they meet, and this time is no different; it continues until the bitter end. On this day, it’s a title match where the uncrowned emperor Carlos Rivera challenges champion Jose Mendoza.
As Joe is about to leave, Yoko’s manager rushes in, pale-faced, to deliver news from the overseas match.
Joe and Yoko assume it’s a report of Carlos winning by knockout, but shockingly, it’s revealed that Carlos was knocked out in just 1 minute and 33 seconds of the first round, not by losing to Jose, but by already being broken by a Japanese boxer, Joe Yabuki.
Hearing this, Joe is left speechless, reflecting on all his past opponents like Wolf, Rikishi, and Carlos, and he leaves the Shiraki Gym in a daze.
Yoko’s thoughts on Joe’s future: Until now, Joe’s nickname has been “Messenger from Hell, Joe Yabuki.”
And the nickname given by a newspaper reporter after the Carlos fight was “Grim Reaper, Joe Yabuki.”
With opponents already reluctant to fight Joe, this news makes it even worse.
Exhausting all options, Danjo heads to the Shiraki Gym as a last resort and consults with Yoko Shiraki about management.
Then, Yoko proposes an astonishing plan, suggesting that they should look beyond Japan and eventually have Joe fight champion Jose Mendoza. Despite Joe’s disdain for Yasuko Shiraki as an unbearable rich girl, the truth is, without her, the Carlos fight, let alone the final match with Jose Mendoza, would not have happened.
Yoko Shiraki may have been both a goddess of luck and a goddess of destruction for Joe.
Meanwhile, there’s no tension between Joe and Noriko, and Noriko has always been very fond of Joe. However, it’s impossible to make Joe notice that, as he has boxing on his mind.
After the shocking knockout loss of Carlos Rivera and the news of him becoming punch drunk, a few days later, by chance, Joe and Noriko have their first and last date.
During this time, Noriko notices Joe becoming increasingly downhearted, like a fighting dog getting hurt. Unable to bear it, she persuades Joe to quit boxing.

Then, Noriko reveals her decisive feelings of giving up on Joe: “Until boxing burns out completely, there will be no ash left, only pure white ashes.”
Realizing that there is no place for herself in Joe’s life filled with destructive impulses, Noriko decides to leave him.
It’s a shame that Noriko’s good nature and personality stand out among heroines in boys’ manga.
Even Joe, at this moment, seems to have made a firm resolve to dedicate himself more deeply to boxing in response to his own words.
